Just about all modern fairy imagery is made to sell bright happy merchandise with the promise that might grant wishes or make someone fly. While I am a big fan of capitalism in general, every time I see one of these fairies I think we are missing something. Just go read some old Brothers Grimm and see what I mean.
The Dark Faeries in this digital painting are inspired by those stories of Faeries, which is also why I am using the traditional spelling here. These Faeries lead you into the woods with their lights, or they might steal children, or deceive you into giving up your lover. They are dangerous and devious because it is their nature, and they do not have any trouble making their nests out of your bones. These Faeries prefer darkness and seclusion but have been known to makes their nests in decrepit urban areas near humans.
Maybe the overly cute and bright fairies really are more devious than I give them credit. After all only a truly evil creature can do something like this…
